The Talbot County Board of Commissioners will sponsor it’s annual Youth Fishing Rodeo this Saturday, May 24. The fun will begin at 8 a.m. and end at noon at Talbot County Park Pond located at 170 Park Street in Talbotton. Anglers must be 4-16 years of age by May 24 to participate. There will be a limit of 10 fish per child.

The pungent aroma of Gardenia permeates my childhood memories. My wife has been diligently working with her plants and flowers, some days until nearly dark. For her it is a labor of love as it is with all who enjoy the colors and smells provided by flowers. It also serves to remind me of childhood memories. Many of you my age and older grew up in homes without air conditioning as home air conditioning units did not start becoming widespread in rural areas until the mid to late 1960s and early 1970s. During spring, summer and fall, windows were often kept open to help provide natural cooling – at least compared to outside. Some older large houses had tall ceilings to help with keeping the inside cooler. The house I grew up in was old but rather small so did not have tall ceilings and we used fans to circulate air.
Greetings and blessings! Congratulations to all of you outstanding, remarkable graduates! And I’m especially proud and grateful for our CEHS 2025 graduates, my Alma Mater, formerly Ruth Carter. Apparently, you’ve reached a point of no return; either to fail or succeed in life. And the question before is, Where do I go from here? In fact, some of you perhaps are all excited, thinking “I got it made now!” but not so. You see, you’ve reached the critical stage of your life now that transitions you from childhood to young adulthood. But however, graduates don’t let the world of uncertainty scare you because the fact is nothing is certain but death. If you live, you will die! But if you strongly trust, lean and depend on God, He’ll take care of you.
Back in October of 2021, I wrote a column regarding the flight of actor William Shatner aboard a Blue Origin capsule into space. At the time, Shatner was 90 years old and set (and still holds) the record for the oldest person ever to go into space. The flight was not unlike the first two Mercury flights in 1961 - suborbital, up-and-down journeys that crossed the Kármán Line. That’s the official international designation between Earth’s atmosphere and what we would consider space, and if you go above that, you have been in space and are (unofficially at least) an astronaut.
Central Elementary High School proudly celebrated academic excellence and leadership as it held its annual induction ceremony for the National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). The event honored students who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service.
Early voting for the June 17 Public Service Commission Special Primary Election will begin on Tuesday, May 27 and end on Friday, June 13. Early Voting will be held at the Talbot County Board of Elections and Registration Office located at 1761 Geneva Highway in Talbotton.
As a reporter, there are times you have to write those bad news stories, and sometimes they are about people you know, and that makes it even more difficult. That was the case for me last week when I had to write about a teenager I’ve watched grow and develop over the years being arrested. Writing bad news is not a fun part of the job, but it has to be done. Having to write something bad about someone you know make it even more difficult. It has happened to me several times over the years, but it never gets easier to do.
It’s fun to realize that in just over a month, summer begins. I do enjoy summer, and I imagine you do as well. Spring has always been my favorite season, as I find that the farther I get into my dotage, the less I enjoy very hot, humid weather. But summer has much to recommend it as well. Speaking of recommending, may I suggest some trivial information for you to enjoy? I’ve unearthed some fresh tidbits for this week, and I do hope you enjoy them.
