The students and faculty of Central Elementary-High School came together for an inspiring Black History Program celebrating the theme: “Bridging the Gap and Leading the Way: From Africa to America—Our Past, Present, and Future.” The school production, filled with cultural reflections, tributes, and historical recognition, took attendees on a powerful journey through time.
The program was divided into three acts, each representing a pivotal part of the African American experience:
• Act I – From Africa to America: “Celebrating the Past” highlighted the rich heritage and struggles that shaped the foundation of the Black experience in America.
• Act II – The Present: “Continuing the Dream” focused on the ongoing pursuit of justice, equality, and excellence in today’s world.
• Act III – The Future: “Moving Forward” looked ahead to the promising future being forged by the next generation of leaders.
A key highlight of the evening was the recognition of several distinguished African Americans from Talbot County who have made significant contributions in various fields. Honorees included Evelyn SPECIALElizabeth Wright, Mrs. Navie Lou Epps, The Bussey Sisters Gospel Group, William Huff, J.B. King, Henrietta “Red” Howard, Linda Kate Leonard, John Raymond Terry, Brittney Smith, Terrance Ferguson, Lloyd Neal, Pierre Coffey, Cavana Epps, Miriam Samuels, Raytez Jenkins, and Cedrick “Bohagon” Leonard.
The program also featured a special dedication to the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black Women’s Army Corps unit that played a critical role in World War II, ensuring mail delivery to U.S. troops in Europe under challenging conditions.
Leading the program with grace and professionalism was Mr. Chris Kelley, Field Representative for the 2nd Congressional District of Georgia in the United States House of Representatives under U.S. Congressman Sanford Bishop. His presence and participation added to the significance of the event.
The planning committee acknowledged that while several outstanding individuals were honored, there are many more who have contributed immensely to Talbot County and beyond. The event served as a heartfelt tribute to both well-known and unsung heroes whose legacies continue to inspire the community.
With deep gratitude to all participants, attendees, and supporters, the program was a resounding success. As the community moves forward, it remains committed to preserving history, celebrating achievements, and paving the way for a brighter future.
