40 Turn Out for Senior Fishing Event
Talbot County Sheriff Bobby Gates, Jr. hosted Talbot County’s first ever Senior Citizen Fishing Rodeo on May 30 at Heritage Park in Talbotton. There were over 40 participants that attended the joyous occasion.
Some seniors came to fish, some came to fellowship, and some just came out to watch and enjoy.
Talbot County Sheriff Bobby Gates, Jr. hosted Talbot County’s first ever Senior Citizen Fishing Rodeo on May 30 at Heritage Park in Talbotton. There were over 40 participants that attended the joyous occasion.
Some seniors came to fish, some came to fellowship, and some just came out to watch and enjoy.
Some citizens who heard about the fishing rodeo came from Marion County.
Sheriff Gates gave gift cards for three categories for the event. The categories were:
1. Oldest Fisherman and Fisherwoman – receiving $50 each;
2. Heaviest catch for a male and a female – receiving $30 each;
3. Most catch for a male and a female – receiving $25 each.
The oldest Fisherman was Mr. Hudson Murray, 81 years young from Marion County and the oldest Fisherwoman was Mrs. Bobbie McKinney, 89 years young from Marion County.
The heaviest catch for a female was Mrs. Ella Owens from Talbot Coounty with a one pound fish and the heaviest catch for a male was a tie between Mr. Otis Murray from Marion County with a 1 ½ pound fish and Mr. Rickey Jones from Talbot County. with a 1 ½ pound fish. A tie breaker was done between the two, and Mr. Murray turned out to be the winner.
The most catch for a female was Mrs. Mattie Howard from Talbot County with 16 fish and the most catch for a male was Mr. Otis Murray with 12 fish.
Just to mention, Reverand Cleo Smith from Talbot County had a total catch of seven fish.
Everyone had a wonderful time and they really enjoyed it.
Sheriff Gates was a little worried about the weather at first, but the seniors were prepared with umbrellas and raincoats when the rain came.
Sheriff Gates said he is looking forward to next year, and plans to have a bigger crowd participating.
Sheriff Gates said he would like to thank everyone who made this event a success.
