Woman Dies in Automobile Accident
A Waverly Hall man was one of two drivers involved in a December 20 traffic accident in Lee County, Alabama, that left an elderly woman dead.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the accident took place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, on U.S. 280 in Lee County near the 103 mile marker. Troopers said Betty E. Burke, 81, of Opelika was driving a 2015 Hyundai Sonata when she reportedly attempted to turn onto Lee Road 72 when her car ran into a 2021 GMC Yukon driven by Jarrod M. Thorne, 37, of Waverly Hall.

A Waverly Hall man was one of two drivers involved in a December 20 traffic accident in Lee County, Alabama, that left an elderly woman dead.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the accident took place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, on U.S. 280 in Lee County near the 103 mile marker. Troopers said Betty E. Burke was transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital for medical treatment, but died of her injuries on Monday, December 22.
Troopers did not report if Thorne was injured in the accident.
No charges were reported to have been filed, and the accident was still under investigation by Troopers at last report.
